Yep that’s right, Cairns has officially been announced as the 4th ‘stop’ of the 2022 Crankworx world tour and understandably everyone we’ve spoken to and heard from online is absolutely f*king stoked about it!
Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll know that Crankworx the world’s largest MTB festival which now tours the globe in the form of a 4-event series. The weeklong Crankworx schedule includes events such as Slopestyle, Dual Slalom, Slope Style, Speed’n’Style, DH and Whip Off’s into one massive festival. The King and Queen of Crankworx must be the ultimate bike handlers to take the crowns.
You will likely see some of the world’s best riders like Nicolai Rogatkin, Thomas Lemoine and Kade Edwards throwing down against each other. However, it will also be a prime opportunity to see home-grown Aussie talent like Mike Ross, Luke Parker, Harriet Burbridge-Smith, and Caroline Buchannan take on the world. There is no doubt that Mic Hannah will be out there showing that old dogs don’t need new tricks.
The event has been in planning since 2018, with Crankworx manager David Kinnard saying,
“We have been working with the team in Cairns since 2018 to make this happen. To see all the pieces of the puzzle come together, and to start working with the team on the ground to plan a new World Tour festival, is such a dream. Cairns is one-of-a-kind, with the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef and has epic riding throughout. Plus, there is a major passion locally for mountain biking, not to mention a history of running major mountain bike events. Crankworx Cairns will give our athletes an additional fourth stop to compete at, give mountain bike fans from around the world a solid taste of this unique destination, and bring the ultimate experience in mountain biking to our fans in Australia. We couldn’t be more excited. We are delighted that the Crankworx World Tour will be coming to Cairns for the next two years. The event is the result of a culmination of a huge amount of work that began years ago when Cairns was identified as the perfect backdrop for an international event of this magnitude. We now look forward to working with the many teams that will bring this great spectacle to life and to ensuring that there is a tangible legacy for Mountain bikers in years to come.”

Why Cairns? Why the bloody hell not!!
What could possibly be better than spending the day watching the world’s best throw-down followed by beers on the best beaches on earth? If that isn’t your jam, then there are a myriad of hidden waterfalls, cliffs and world heritage rainforests ready to be explored. While competitors will be shredding the competition trails, there are hundreds of epic tracks for visitors to rip down before and after the competition.
Enough about off-the-bike experiences, let’s talk about the riding ey!! Anyone who watched the world cup races know the DH track ain’t nuttin’ to mess with. To build the Slope Style and Slalom courses, Glen Jacobs’ World trail and Elevate Trail (Crankworx trail specialists) are creating some epic trails. Tracks that will no doubt be one of a kind in Australia and kickstart more trails like them popping up all over Aus.
So what’s next? Well, it is time to book your leave, make some reservations and get your ass to Cairns from October 5th to the 9th. It is a guaranteed good time with your mates or your entire family.
