Thredbo’s annual Cannonball Festival went down last weekend with nothing but epic feedback, Yep, you guessed it, most of Revo couldn’t make it up due some pretty major commitments. Revo co-founder and editor, Jonathon Taylor getting married to long time partner Em! Massive congrats in order and let it be known an amazing time was had sans bikes. It can happen! But I digress… Luckily Kane Naaraat’s hella keen eye for photographic brilliance was there to capture the goodness for you in a banger of a photo story. Check the photos, the highlights edit (above) and recap on what is fast becoming the biggest MTB event in the country.
Over 600 riders and a truckload of spectators got amongst it in blue bird conditions over the three event days. After rain earlier in the week, conditions were pretty much perfect, the freshly rebuilt trails running fast and grippy.
While snow still adorned the top slopes, Friday saw the Canyon All Mountain Assault take place, down the fun as all hell 7km long all-mountain trail. Canberra shredder Claire Whiteman taking out the Pro Women’s division and Benjamin Forbes winning the Pro Men’s. The Pump Track party/comp went down on the Village Green that eve Friday under the lights, the figure 8’ish set up sorting out the fastest with Daniele Beecroft and Remy Morton keeping their respective selves on course and to the win.
Saturday brought more bluebird conditions for the Flow trail race. Local legend Tegan Molloy took out the pro womens category alongside Josh Carlson who’s speed and fitness should see him again in the top echelon at EWS. No Cannonball event would be complete without a whip off comp, the bottom 40 foot set the place to be for the one hour jam. Connor Fearon stomped his place on the top step for the second year running, with Ryan Dawson and David McMillan both going above and beyond the majority. Stoked to see the ladies steeping up, Ellie Smith and Ronga Hill getting amongst the steeziest on the mountain.
Sunday is always downhill day… With a ton of people on track, Troy Brosnan and weekend favourite Tegan Molloy won the event taking home $5,000 for their efforts. Tegan also took out the Queen of Cannonball, while Tom Crimmins took out a well deserved King of Cannonball. You could say Thredbo is having a good crack at making this event the best in the country, with trails slowly evolving and the resort slowly becoming more and more bike friendly, things are definitely looking up. We’ll see you there next year!
