Get set to check out the most advanced e-MTB Focus Bikes has ever created!
Without a doubt mid-power, light-weight e-MTB’s have become ‘the’ category to emerge from year model 2022 and the latest brand to join the party is, you guessed it, Focus. We’ve been fortunate enough review to several ‘SL’ e-MTB’s over the past couple of months and it’s a category that we’ve become super excited about. We believe SL bikes offer riders a perfectly balanced blend of motorised assistance but given their lighter overall weight and less power the actual feel and performance of how the bike handles out on a trail when you’re not pedalling is akin to the regular ‘non-eBike’ and we really love that.
There’s no denying that the German mega brand Focus have built a reputation for being a leader in the e-MTB market having produced a heap of big, burly, full powered e-MTB’s throughout the past decade. And now, their engineering team has refined all of that e-MTB knowhow into their debut ‘SL’ bike…
Introducing the all-new Jam2 SL! And yes, at first glance this bike doesn’t scream ‘e-Bike’ given it isn’t bulky and doesn’t have a bulging bottom bracket area, however we assure you hidden inside this beauty is everything needed to tick the e-MTB boxes. The Jam2 SL boasts a sensational looking full carbon frame which has been reduced to the absolute minimum to make the most of every trail. Focus’ engineers went over the new frame with a fine tooth comb to ensure there was enough carbon to remain reliable while they removed some from specific places to keep the weight down. They even went about using their own blends of high and low modulus carbon fibre sheets to ensure every part of the frame was just right.
You will also notice that the shock is half hidden in the top tube to maintain the ideal kinematics and have the lowest standover possible. The suspension design doesn’t share the same silhouette as their predecessors but, this version of F.O.L.D. is definitely an evolution for their suspension platform.
To power the bike while maintaining its astonishing 17.9 kg weight, Focus have fitted the FAZUA Ride 60 motor. Providing 60 nm of torque and a max 450w power output the intuitive motor will have you reaching new heights in no time. Somehow focus managed to fit a whopping 430wh battery in that slim down tube and, with the option for a 200wh extender pack, you will be smiling for miles. This is not Focus’s first foray with the FAZUA motors either, you will find them on their Paralane and Haven2 models so you know they have it dialled.
The 150/160mm suspension platform is surrounded by geometry that inspires riders to hop and dart around their favourite trails. Adjustable geometry gives the Jam a 64.5 to 65.5 degree head angle and 7mm of adjustment in the rear chainstays(440mm-447). Enough to play around with and dial in your perfect ride on your favourite trails.
With 4 models within the range there is no doubt you will be able to find a model that tickles your fancy. The top spec’d models have all the electric robotics and shiny gold Kashima you could ask for. With X01 AXS, Fox Factory suspension package and carbon bits everywhere, this bike is elite. As you move down the line you see less Kashima and products from Magura and DVO but, the essence of the bike is still there, a beautiful carbon frame with a superb motor ready to take you anywhere, anytime.
