Giants big hitting Reign re-imagined for 2023

Giants latest Reign enduro bikes have been forged in the fires of race day competition.

For 2023, their all new frames offer adjustable geometry and the option to use 29 front and back, or go mullet with a 27.5 rear wheel. Engineered and developed with pro enduro racers and technicians from the Giant Factory Off-Road Team, Giant are calling it the most versatile Reign range in its near two decade history.

Back in 2005, it was one of the first Giant bikes to roll with Maestro suspension, a bike that was an all-round shredder, be it between the tape or bombing anything a trail could throw at it. Fast forward to the here and now, the eighth generation of Reign expands on that versatility. With laid back, long and low enduro geometry, it’s built to give riders more choices when it comes to riding style and terrain.

Team riders Youn Deniaud and Mckay Vezina played a key role in its development. Youn racing a prototype model to a stage win and a top-five overall finish at the final round of the 2022 Enduro World Series in Loudonvielle, France.

We spent more than a year getting everything just right with the new Reign. I got more and more comfortable with it throughout the season and had my best results later in the year. I think a lot of that has to do with the bike, which is really helping me push new limits.”

Youn Deniaud.

Reign Advanced Pro 1

Deniaud was racing a prototype of the new Reign Advanced Pro, the flagship model that’s built on a full-composite frameset. The new Reign Advanced Pro and Reign chassis are engineered with new geometry that gives pros like Deniaud the speed and control they need to shave seconds off their runs. At the same time, both series offer everyday riders the stability and confidence to elevate their skills on more gnarly terrain. Lower standover height and longer reach makes it easier to throw the bike around, from low-speed cornering on tight, technical terrain to sending kickers, the new geo makes it easier to find your flow.

ADJUSTABLE GEO

Adding to the versatility, a new three-position flip chip lets you adjust the geometry to suit your riding style and terrain. It offers bottom bracket drop adjustments in 5mm increments (35, 30 or 25mm) and also lets you change the head tube angle (63.5. 63.9 or 64.2 degrees) and seat tube angle (78.3, 78.7 or 79 degrees). Scroll down for the full geo charts!

The high position of the flip chip increases ground clearance, a good option for tighter, more technical terrain. In this position, the steeper seat tube angle helps you power up climbs. Put the flip chip into the low position, and the head tube gets slacker and the bottom bracket drops. This gives the bike more confident handling at higher speeds and cornering. For those who want a more neutral setup, the middle position brings the best of both worlds.

RACE-BRED SUSPENSION

Out back, the Maestro rear suspension system, now offers 160mm of travel, an additional 14mm over the previous generation. The trunnion mount shock has a longer stroke (62.5mm compared to 60mm), which gives it a smooth, active feel on a variety of terrain. The Advanced Forged Composite upper rocker arm adds stiffness to the system, which improves the bike’s handling while cornering, accelerating and bombing down chunky terrain. Up front, both the Reign Advanced Pro and Reign now come with a 170mm fork to help gobble up trail impacts and improve control.

The Reign SX, which also features Maestro suspension, is aimed at  more aggressive trails and terrain, with a plush setup that includes 165mm of rear travel and a 190mm dual crown fork up front. We’re jumping in early and calling this one of the most versatile mini DH rigs of this generation.

REAR WHEEL OPTIONS

The new flip chip setup also offers the option to use a 27.5-inch rear wheel (paired with a 29-inch front wheel), which gives the bike more ATC (arse-to-tire) clearance in the rear. Using the larger 29-inch rear wheel improves stability and roll-over capabilities, while the 27.5 option delivers a more agile, snappier feel. It’s a quick and easy change to adjust the bike’s handling and feel, if you’ve got an extra wheel hanging around…

Heart and soul, the frame….

Frame wise, both series of frames have benefitted from additional bulk around the bottom bracket area alongside gaining a sweet internal storage system inside the big ol downtube. Add to that one very sorted frame protector for those of you shuttling a lot for peace of mind. Advanced models mainframe and rear swingarm are crafted with a high-performance carbon fiber and custom resin mix that’s custom made in Giant’s own composite factory. Handcrafted monocoque construction makes it extremely lightweight, stiff and compliant, plus gains a claimed 39 percent additional rear-end stiffness over the previous generation.

Reign models roll with Aluxx SL Aluminium, made predominantly from 6011 alloy which delivers some of the best-in-class strength-to-weight ratios.

Reign Research & Development Insights

Giant spend a huge amount of time and money on research and development, testing and more. Watch the racers and the team manager talk about some of this process in the creation of the new Reign.
