RockShox unveils new internals

Continuing their relentless pursuit of performance RockShox recently released their 2025 fork line-up with a host of small, and not-so-small updates to the internals which have been rolled out across the Pike, Lyrik, ZEB, and Boxxer ranges. The biggest ‘update’ that these models now are sporting is the fresh ‘Charger 3.1’ damper which aims to once again improve the fork’s already impressive control and response characteristics. Keep an eye out later in this issue where you’ll find a complete guide to RockShox 2025 fork and rear shock line-ups.

Recon E HL night lights

This past Winter several of our staff got right into night riding with weekly trail sessions. Riding at night using a torch to light up the darkness offers a totally different and fun trail experience and, of course, it also greatly increases the amount of opportunity that you’ll have to head out for a ride because you don’t have to worry about the sun being up, eh! Of course, the key ingredient that you’ll need to get yourself is a good quality torch. We’ve been liking the Giant Recon E HL range because they’re super bright, they can take a beating without breaking and they’re nice and affordable compared to other brands/models on the market. Perhaps the thing we dig most about this light system from Giant though is that the light has a cable that can be plugged directly into most e-Bike motor power units which saves having to recharge the torch as it gets powered directly from the bikes main battery. If you haven’t yet given night riding a shot we definitely recommend giving it a try.

PureVue aren’t normal goggles

When we first heard that Fox were working on a new eyewear product that was going to blend traditional sunnies with regular MX style goggles, we didn’t know what to expect… Well, here they are on the market. Called PureVue they’re an MTB specific goggle that have been designed to be worn with open-face helmets to increase ventilation to the rider’s face for long-ride comfort compared to traditional goggles which tend to get hot and sweaty. We have a full review on these bad boys up on our website and YouTube channel right now if you’re intrigued and want to know more.

GoodYear have launched fresh rubber

Our editor JT has been swearing by the performance of the GoodYear ‘Newton’ tyre that the brand released a few years back and, in fact, he’s been consistently running them on one of his enduro bikes ever since. So, when GoodYear announced that they had a new gravity focused model releasing, we immediately wanted to check them out. These Wrangler MTR’s feature an aggressive tread pattern made up of large strategically placed knobs. Compound wise we’re stoked to see the brand chose to use the same impressive ‘Grip3S’ rubber that the Newton’s use, which is a really soft and slow rebounding rubber that provides exceptional ‘bite’ on pretty much any trail surface and best of all the rubber is surprisingly long wearing given it’s quite a soft compound. Sizing wise the Wrangler MTR’s are offered in a 2.4” for either 27.5” or 29” rims. GoodYear tyres are available through PSI Cycles at better bike stores Australia wide.

Let the ‘games begin!

Gold makes everything better, right? We’ve recently gotten our hands on a set of latest ‘gen Fox Factory 38 forks and we are planning on giving them a serious run for their money over the next few months of hard testing. Fox claim to have made some impressive advances in the performance and DIY tune ability with their new forks.  But, we’ll be the judge and jury of that thank you very much. Check back in our next issue to find out how we got on with these golden wonders.

Time (soft launch) new pedals

Bucking the trend of SRAM’s often internet breaking massive new product unveils, Time (the iconic top tier French pedal brand that SRAM bought a couple of years ago) recently tip-toed their latest clipless MTB pedal line-up into the market. Grabbing our attention are some key updates to the popular SPECIALE range.  Intended for gravity and trail riders, the SPECIALE range is now offered in two platform sizes, small and large, available across both models, the 12 and 10 (the ‘8’ version of past has been replaced by the ‘10’). As fan’s of the SPECIALE we’re glad to see that the brand has chosen to stick with the ATAC mechanism for ‘clipping in and out’ and they’ve also carried over their original ‘tried and proven’ cleat design. The new season update also includes some sweet new colourways offered across both models, and there’s also now an ‘ultra Gucci’ titanium axel SPECIALE model which is going to be one of the lightest DH certified pedals on the planet.

No fuss grips for the win

To be totally honest we stumbled across these grips by chance. OneUp Components had sent us a box dropper posts to review a little while back and they included a few sets of grips in there as well which we never gave a second thought to. Then a few weeks back a (really nice) bike arrived at the office for testing but the stock grips felt garbage, so before we headed to the trails we ripped them off and these OneUp grips just happened to be sitting right near the doorway of our storeroom and so on they went. Well, it turns out these grips are bloody sweet performers in their own right! The rubber is the perfect mix of softness and stickiness. And the rear section of the grip where your finger tips rest have these cleverly designed ridges that provide extra grip without needing to clench your hold any firmer. OneUp grips, we’d recommend giving a set a try for sure.

Trek utilises radar safety

Every now and then in the bike industry a brand develops a product that sets a new industry benchmark and the new ultra clever ‘CarBack Radar Tail Light’ is one such invention. The unit incorporates a bright daytime running light which is visible to drivers from up to 2 km away, as well as a radar which detects rear-approaching vehicles from up to 240m away and it then alerts the rider of the incoming hazard with audio and visual alerts via their preferred paired GPS cycling computer, GPS smartwatch or smartphone. The unit is super lightweight and easily charges via USB for up to 8 hours of running time. Pretty sweet if you ask us!

10 million dollar trail pledge!

Have you heard that Shimano recently announced that they would be donating 1 million dollars (US dollars) per year across the next 10 years to support MTB trail access. Shimano are calling it their ‘Trail Born’ program which has been designed to support trail building and trail advocacy in order to protect and expand trail access right around the globe. And perhaps best of all as part of the announcement Shimano said that a large chunk of the initial funding allocation is going to be invested in creating an awesome new hand-cut singletrack down at Blue Derby in Tasmania which is scheduled to be open and ready to ride in early 2025.
